This study book provides an overview of the economic and social history of Europe over the last thousand years and an introduction to the most important research questions and debates in the field. It is aimed at students and teachers of bachelor's and master's programmes in history and other economic, social and cultural science disciplines, as well as an audience interested in economic and social history syntheses and contexts.

In addition to spatio-temporal concepts and theoretical perspectives, it deals with the major themes of social and economic life: economic growth, industrialisation, population, technology, agriculture, trade, industry, labour relations, migrations, consumption, living together in the home and family, social stratification, class differences, gender difference, social movements and Europe in a global context. The authors research and teach at the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna or are in close cooperation with the Institute.
