My doctoral research addresses a central question: what is the prison? Is it a disciplinary device that, through punishment, disciplines bodies? Or is it a security-oriented device that performs an eliminative function toward forms of behaviour deemed dangerous to society? By using the category of “punitive regime” and through an analysis of the spatial dimension of the Italian penitentiary system, the presentation seeks to explore and clarify these issues.

Gianfranco Lanzolla is a PhD student at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and visiting fellow at the WISO in the summer term 2026. He studies the Italian prison system during Liberal and Fascist era from 1890 to 1943.
