The workshop aims to move beyond traditional assessments of the impact of silver and gold on monetary policies to explore the institutions, ideas, and practices that shaped the extraction of mineral resources across the premodern world. Convened by Dr. Gabriele Marcon and Dr. Claire Sabel (University of Vienna), the event brings together scholars working on mining regions that have rarely been considered together in the context of early modern political and economic transformations through comparative and thematic approaches.
The workshop is funded by the ERC SCARCE (PI: Sebastian Felten), the FWF ESPRIT project “Mining the Earth, Roaming the Globe” (PI Gabriele Marcon), and the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna.
PROGRAM (pdf)
The workshop will host four sessions, and one archives roundtable which includes three archivists discussing their work with significant collections related to mining history in early modern Central Europe.
Please note that each session will be based on pre-circulated papers, and participants are expected to read the papers in advance, as there will be no formal presentations.
To register and receive the pre-circulated papers, please email gabriele.marcon@univie.ac.at or claire.sabel@univie.ac.at.
