Your personal sphere of influence:

As PhD student in a predoctoral position at the Department of Economic and Social History, you actively participate in research, teaching and administration in the field of Global Economic and Social History and in the research cluster “Global History”

Moreover, you play a key role in the research team “Micro-Spatial Perspective”, together with one professor and one postdoc researcher. The position is limited to 48 months and should be filled as soon as possible.


Your future tasks:

  • Holding classes independently for Bachelor, Master and Teachers’ Diplomas on the basis of the current wage agreement of the University. The teaching workload is generally one course per year in the first three years, and two courses per year in the fourth year.
  • Co-organizing conferences, workshops and meetings related to the research team “Micro-Spatial Perspective” as well as engagement in administrative tasks of the University.
  • Further academic qualification (dissertation, publications, conference participation, etc.).
  • The conclusion of the dissertation agreement is expected within 12 to 18 months.


This is part of your profile:

  • Successfully completed Master or Diploma study in history by 10 May 2024.
  • Substantial, provable competence in global history, microhistory and/or social history (i.e. an excellent MA dissertation and publications). 
  • An explicit reflection on the micro-spatial perspective and the way this approach can be developed further.
  • The successful candidate is able to assist in communicating research results into the public.
  • Awareness of theory and methods in history, and especially in global history and microhistory.
  • For German native-speakers: German and proficiency in English; For non-German native-speakers: Proficiency in English and the willingness to be able to teach in German within three years from the signing of the contract
  • Advanced computer skills are desirable.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Organisational skills.
