The Centre for South-East European Economic History invites applications from undergraduate and graduate students in any area of economics for a three-day summer school in quantitative economic history. The programme will provide an opportunity for students to learn about new research in economic history that applies modern economic methods, receive feedback from international scholars, and engage with peers in a supportive academic environment.

We particularly encourage applications from students interested in long-term economic growth and development, income and wealth inequality, and international trade.

The summer school will consist of lectures and workshops led by Leonard Kukić (University of Vienna), Stefan Nikolić (Loughborough University), Filip Novokmet (University of Zagreb), and keynote guest Max Schulze (London School of Economics).

We will explore the latest research that uses economic theory and quantitative methods to address both historical and contemporary questions. In a small-group setting, participants will work from a selected reading list and engage in group discussions. A special session will offer practical advice on international opportunities for master’s studies, as well as doctoral and postdoctoral research positions in economics and economic history.

Submission Guidelines:

Interested participants should submit a letter of motivation explaining their interest in attending the summer school (max. 500 words), along with a CV, by 16 May 2025. Submissions should be sent to fnovokmet@efzg.hr. Accepted participants will be notified by the end of May.

Funding and Logistics:

There is no application fee. Accommodation will be provided for three nights in nearby residence halls, and lunch will be offered during the summer school. Participants are expected to cover their own travel  xpenses. The summer school is financially supported by the Economic History Society.
